Central Pattana reaffirms its leadership toward Net Zero 2050, partnering with Chiang Mai University and key Allies to drive sustainovation and transform research into social impact

  • Central Pattana joins forces with Chiang Mai University, local agencies, and national business networks to promote three key pathways for sustainable innovation:
    1) pioneering a Circular Economy Model, 2) expanding the Green Road initiative, and
    3) inspiring Start-up & SME Empowerment.
  • Reflecting on 45 years of sustainable growth, Central Pattana continues to build a Sustainable & Social Business Ecosystem integrated with its core operations through the Sustainovation approach — driving sustainability as an essential part of economic, environmental, and social progress.

Bangkok - Central Pattana plc, Thailand’s No.1 sustainable real estate developer under the vision “Imagining better futures for all,” continues to advance its sustainability initiatives toward the Net Zero 2050 goal. The company has joined hands with Chiang Mai University to sign a Memorandum of Understanding on “Promoting the Commercialization of Research and Creating Social Enterprises for Sustainable Development,” in collaboration with key local and national partners including the Energy Research and Development Institute - Nakornping (ERDI-CMU), the Multidisciplinary Research and Development Institute (MRDI-CMU), the Science and Technology Park (STeP-CMU), the Thailand Climate Business Network (ThaiCBN), and the Krabi Municipality. Together, the partners aim to co-develop innovative prototypes that can be scaled up for real-world applications, driving positive impact across both social and economic dimensions. The signing ceremony took place at the Exhibition Hall, Regional Science Park Administration Building (Northern Region).

Mr. Wuttikiat Techamongklapiwat, Chief Operating Officer of Central Pattana Plc., stated: “Central Pattana places great importance on social and environmental development under the ‘The Ecosystem for All’ model, aiming toward Net Zero 2050 and driving ESG initiatives through the promotion of green innovation, support for community products and employment, and systematic environmental management. We believe that sustainable development must result from collaboration across all sectors, particularly the integration of valuable knowledge, research, and innovation from universities with private-sector market mechanisms and the power of civil society.

The collaboration with Chiang Mai University marks a significant step in connecting academic knowledge with business, creating real value for Thai society. It will serve as the foundation for a strong innovation ecosystem, fostering the growth of new entrepreneurs, strengthening the economy, and enhancing community quality of life. We are ready to cooperate in technology transfer, prototype development, market testing support, and distribution channels, ensuring that research outputs can enter the real economic value chain sustainably. Furthermore, we will expand our collaboration with Chiang Mai University and all relevant partners to other regions, aiming to build a high-quality, sustainable, and future-ready society under the vision of ‘Imagining better futures for all.’”

The operational approach and collaboration under this project are organized into three key initiatives:

1) Pioneering a Circular Economy Model - Closing the loop on food waste from Central shopping centres and food courts at Central Chiangmai Airport, transforming it into low-carbon rice for sale at “Kad Luang”, Central Chiangmai Airport. This initiative is carried out in collaboration with the Energy Research and Development Institute - Nakornping (ERDI-CMU) and the Thailand Climate Business Network (ThaiCBN). Central Pattana collects and separates food waste from its shopping centres, processing it into Compressed Biomethane Gas (CBG) to generate electricity and alternative fuel. The residual sludge from production is repurposed as planting material and organic fertilizer to cultivate low-carbon rice and chemical-free vegetables. The produce is then sold at Kad Luang, creating shared value at every stage and concretely closing the Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) Economy loop. Since the project’s launch in Q4/2024, over 180 tonnes of food waste (averaging 1.5 tonnes per day) have been repurposed, and more than 200 kilograms of organic rice have been sold.

2) Expanding and Linking Civil Engineering Expertise to Create the Green Road - Thailand’s first eco-friendly road made from recycled plastic in the South, located at Central Krabi. This initiative is implemented in collaboration with the Multidisciplinary Research and Development Institute (MRDI-CMU) and the Krabi Municipality. A total of 2.5 tonnes of plastic waste and 5.8 tonnes of biochar—produced from local economic biomass in the upper Northern region—were used as key materials in the road construction. This approach reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 25.89 tonnes of CO₂ equivalent per year, equivalent to planting 1,250 large trees annually.

3) Inspiring New Businesses Through Innovation for Small Entrepreneurs - Start-up & SME Empowerment - Central Pattana, in collaboration with the Science and Technology Park, Chiang Mai University (STeP-CMU), supports sustainable innovation entrepreneurs and shopping centre tenants in accessing modern technologies and platforms. The initiative also strengthens business management, workforce skill development, and service quality enhancement. This collaboration aims to create a sustainable business ecosystem that connects entrepreneurs, communities, and customers, fostering long-term shared growth.

Meanwhile, the Thailand Climate Business Network (ThaiCBN) plays a key role as a strategic partner, working with Central Pattana to drive Climate Action initiatives, develop circular economy innovations, and create Net Zero models that can be scaled nationally in the future. These initiatives demonstrate that over the past 45 years, Central Pattana has gone beyond occasional CSR activities, building a Sustainable & Social Business Ecosystem truly integrated with its core operations. Through the Sustainovation approach, the company ensures that sustainability becomes an integral part of growth across economic, environmental, and social dimensions, enhancing the quality of life for communities nationwide.
